Whats up?

I'll be heading to New Orleans to spend my New Year's and to attend the Sugar Bowl. I'll be staying at a hotel about 6 miles north of the Superdome off of IH-10 sort of close to New Orleans Lakefront Airport. Whats that area like? My rate was fairly cheap, so I was curious how that area was.

I'm not too familiar with the area. I'll be with plenty of friends, and we'll be hittin up the places New Orleans is known for. Any other advice would be great. Thanks,

I'm not sure where exactly you are staying, but a lot of hotels in NO East (or even near Lakefront Airport) are on Chef Menteur. I've stayed on Chef Menteur a few times. It's not downtown. The hotel may look a little suspect on the outside (and inside too). It gets pretty deserted at night and I wouldn't consider it a great area of town. I wouldn't stay there at all now post-Katrina. Having said that though, I've never had a problem there. Just use common sense. You say you'll be with a group. Don't leave anything in your car, at all.
And be aware of your surroundings. I know it's not fun, but someone in the group needs to be sober and aware when you get back to the hotel from the Quarter because that's when any problem will occur, if it's going to occur. If you see something that you don't like, don't stop, just turn around and head back the other direction. And don't answer any knocks on doors. New Orleans East isn't exactly the best area of town.

Ok. yeah to be more exact it is on that street. i think like 6322 chef menteur is the address. So should I maybe cancel and find a hotel a little more west? I believe there are some hotels off of IH-10 like 15 miles west. What do you think?

I personally would try to stay downtown if at all possible. Or in Metairie. The touristy parts of NO are back and running, but once you get into the interior, you're really taking your chances.

Look at the Prytania Park Hotel, its close enough and has parking if you want that. Last time I stayed there it was just over $100 a night.

Hello Easton. The La Quinta in Kenner will be fine. I'm glad you changed your mind about the one on Chef Menteur; not a "nice" neighborhood.

Kenner is still a good drive to the Dome though.
