I'll be visiting again, in a few weeks, and this visit will be largely food-focused. I know which restaurants are supposed to be great, but which, do you believe, fail to live up to their reputations? If possible, provide an alternative.

I heard Dooky Chase's isn't as good as it used to be. I've never been though.

Most say Antoine's isn't all that it's cracked up to be.

None of the Emeril's restaurants really impressed me that much. They weren't bad, I was just expecting much better. I can't remember ever having a bad meal at any of the Brennan family restaurants.

One place I would recommend is Jacques Imo's on Oak St. It's not a quiet romantic place. It's probably the loudest restaurant I've ever been in, but the few times I've been there, the food has been excellent.

If you want a good breakfast or lunch spot visited by locals, try Betsy's pancake house or Anita's. Great food for a good price.

Though by no means a horrible dining experience, I personally don't find Galatoire's worthy of it's fame.

In the French Quarter, I find Napoleon House an inexpensive, albeit rather unpretentious place for local fare.

I think you'll do better by hitting up the many bistros along Magazine Street, imo.

I have been to most well-known NOLA restaurants and for me, Galatoire's was the most overrated experience. Also, my first time at Stella! was the best meal I ever had - came back two years late to have a terrible meal for twice the price.

Mother's, hands down. I remember when it was a local sort of place w/ minimal fuss and great food. The place is filthy now, the staff is as rude as the day is long, the clientele is all tourists, and the food has slipped way down. I was very surprised, but others had warned me.

By the same token, Acme Seafood was just wonderful every time we ate there. I loved the place even when they were swamped, and the gumbo and bread pudding were easily 8 out of 10.
