Hi everyone! I am eligible for a housing connect apartment but it doesn't have a dishwasher or washer / dryer which is totally ok... I would totally be down to install these myself... I'm just not sure if it is against the rules. (The building pays for water, so that might be a problem?) I'm not sure if it would clarify appliance policies in the lease, but do you think this would be a problem? Thanks!!

Yes, it will be in your lease that you cannot install a dishwasher and a washer-dryer without the landlord’s permission. If the market-rate tenants have these appliances, that means the building is plumbed for them. In that case, the landlord might agree to install them for you and add the charge to your rent. (There’s a formula for that under rent stabilization.) So ask the management company and see.

On this forum I read about someone in a lottery apartment who had carpeting instead of hardwood flooring. Since the person had allergies, he asked if the landlord could install hardwood, and the landlord did. I don't know if there was a charge for it or not. But certainly ask! As my grandmother used to say, "If you don't ask, you don't get!"

Wow! That's awesome! Good for them! Hopefully they'll let me get a dishwasher!
