I’m not a NYer myself but judging by how many rats and roaches you have and how much you are willing to talk about it you definitely have a problem with trash. Like one Brooklyner said: ‘they throw their trash wherever they happen to be’.
Is it really that bad?

I would really prefer not to talk about it.

NYC Dept of Sanitation is being downsized as we speak. They haven't hired anybody in 2 years. They are making cuts all across the board.

NYC generates a lot of money from tourism, and what is always the first thing that tourists notice? how clean or dirty the sidewalks and streets are. If the OP is referring to people who litter then yes it's a problem. People who litter without a care in the world aren't all there mentally. Sanitation is a huge issue in any big city.

Way too busy waiting in taxi traffic, or way too busy waiting for the 2 train to come?

NYC had a much worse trash problem before..it's actually alot better than it used to be. Some places are worse than others, but overall it has improved...though I can't say whether rats/roaches are better or worse.

Actually, compared to my home city, ATL, NYC does way better at recycling. I was amazed to see how many stores and buildings have recycling recepticles.

Recycling is non existant in the south unless you are a "hippie" type. Sad:-(

Hehe...I have gigantic flies that are totally out of control by me...they are all juiced up on something because they are abnormally large..they do a kamikazi right into your head and then just keep going. Everyone is amazed at how large they are...
