What channels do you get without a Set Top Box?

I'm splitting the cable bill with roommates...

I can't believe even the most basic cable channels aren't available without a digital box that costs $12.95 a month.

Having been on ComCast, BrightHouse, Cablevision... I have never seen such restriction without having a Cable box.

I'm in upper manhattan, is this everyone else's experience? ... if so they can come pick up their one box and cancel this expensive service.

Yep, this is my experience in Brooklyn. When I lived in Jersey City and had comcast, no box was required unless you wanted digital service. Time Warner in Texas didn't require you to have a box either. Honestly, I don't think its technically impossible here, its just Time Warner wanting to Nickel and Dime you for another $12.95. This annoys me too.

PS, you can only get local channels without the box even though a coax cable is plugged into the TV directly.

You can always get REAL TV, over the air digital. There are about 32 to 40 channels on, the usual networks & independents. Just set the TV to Air and scan it, with an antenna hooked up.

I was just trying to put on Cartoon Network, or Nickelodeon for the kids in the other room... these have always been basic over-the-wire cable anywhere I've been.

Sad TWC in their efforts to nickel and dime me will be losing a customer.
