I am moving to NY in a short while.

Looking to pay approx $5000 and things i am looking for are:
- great local area, restaurants, parks etc
- not surrounded by only trendy hipsters or old people
- modern high rise is preferable

Will be working close to Central Park in Midtown at 55th street

Moving to NY - budget of $5000 for rent - where to live?

almost anywhere you please. seriously though on the west side probably above 86th st, and on the east side you may have to start at 90th st, if you want to be closer to the park, in a high rise, and stay under 5k.

I don't think the OP needs to go above 86th street with a $5,000 budget.

I guess the question is what size apartment are you looking for?

thanks for replies

we are two people so i guess around 800-1000 sq feet shoud be enough.

seems some people are obsessed with UES while others say that west village, chelsea etc is a must to live in. as i will be working on 55th street on the east side i thouthink it will be great to be able walk to work. Any thoughts on that?

imo to live near central park is the best, if you are going to live in manhattan. to be able to walk to work in nyc is also a great thing. no matter which street you choose, near the park, and close to 55th st, you will be near everything.

Any place under 110th street near Central Park West is a great place to live and Im sure you could find a great apartment with your 5000 budget. Anything above 110th becomes the GHETTO and have a lot of people hanging around and many undesirables you don't want to live around.

With 5k a month to spend I dont think u need to be on city data asking for a place to live. U should probably just use a broker or ask a co-worker.
