I'm dating a beautiful Domenican girl from the Bronx and we both love good food and working it off afterwards. She has taken me to several Spanish places and I've brought her to several seafood places in City Island. I now want to introduce her to Polish food which is the largest part of my ethnic background. I'd like her to try some great stuffed cabbage. I'd also like for her to try my two culinary favorites, Creole and down south Soul Food. I don't want to travel to some ultra expensive and crowded Manhattan or Harlem restaurant where the food is a deconstructed version of the original. I'd like to take her to an intimate, home cooking but not cheap establishment in the Bronx. I live on Long Island and I don't bring my car into the city so I'd like a place not too far from her neighborhood. She lives in the Soundview area off Westchester ave, so something on the 6 line or a short cab ride away.
I know a weird culinary mix (Polish, Creole, Soul Food) but I would love your suggestions.
There's actually a good (and "fancy") soul food place in Pelham of all places (just over the Westchester County line from the Bronx), Google "Yvonne's Southern Restaurant".
Not sure about the Bronx, but you may find Polish food in Yonkers; the downtown area was actually at one time a large ethnic Polish enclave, and there's still a Polish community center there. Try googling something like "Polish restaurant Bronx" or "Polish restaurant Yonkers". I think if you are willing to go to the other outer boros the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn is a large Polish neighborhood.

Friend in New Rochelle says they are out of business. Thanks anyway.
+1, Karczma is very good, there is usually an hour wait every evening. Its legit. Warning, if you decide to go today, the G train isn't running and you'd have to take a shuttle bus.
If you don't mind traveling to Brooklyn, I would recommend Mitchell's Soul Food on Vanderbilt Avenue in the Prospect Heights section of Brooklyn. It is a mom and pop restaurant, the service can be slow (due to cooking some of the stuff when it is ordered) and it is not trendy but it is good. It is the only place that I have tasted real soul food like I grew up on. Check it out on the net and you will see the rave reviews that people have posted about the food.
I like Sam's Soul Food on the Grand Concourse at 149th. They have table service in the evenings.
