I need to reach Brooklyn College(CUNY) main gate from the subway station. How far is it and how to get there?
Also, is the area around the brooklyn college safe? I am going to be entering Brooklyn for the first time during my stay in NY

You catch the 2 or 5 train to the last stop in Brooklyn (Flathbush Ave/Brooklyn College). If you catch the 5 just make sure it says Flatbush Avenue and not Utica Avenue.

As far as safety is concerned, someone else will need to answer as I don't find it unsafe but I am not in that area on a regular.

I only go around there during the day, and its fine. (not sure about night time), its a very active area with alot of retail. Not sure where the campus entrance is, but should only be a few blocks from the train.

Flatbush-Nostrand cross street area known as "The Junction" is in my backyard. Proper route when leaving train is use either pair of exits closest to token booth clerk manned by clerk and some transit cops. You cannot miss the booth as there is only one. Using either exit will leave you in front of commercial area with 24hr stores (Rite-Aid, Subway, and newstand). Cross Flatbush and use Hillel Place (street BEHIND McDonalds) to walk past BurgerKing/Starbucks blocks and directly to Brooklyn College entrance. This route is quickest and should guarantee you most exposure to light and people.

Thank You all for your replies. Looksl ike lot of retail outlets around the College. This makes me assume that the area is definitely crowded!

Does anyone know if the 2 or 5 is a safe train or not during the day?

Area near Brooklyn College is called "The Junction" since a century ago streetcars crossed paths on rails running along Flatbush and Nostrand Avenues.
