I am considering going to college in that area. I have been getting mixed reviews on the area, and would like to know if it will be safe for a 18 year old black, single female?

There are some very dangerous sections of Jaimaica and beautiful sections. I would rather have my daughter rent somewhere in either Kew Gardens or Fresh Meadows because they are in general more consistently safe and close to St. Johns.

the neighborhood directly surrounding st. john's university (hillcrest/utopia) is very safe. jamaica is a huge neighborhood, one of the largest in land size in the city. the bad areas of jamaica are nowhere near the campus.

Okay thank you for the information. What are the names of the bad areas in Jamaica? So that way when I see them I can steer clear away from them.

Also does anyone know any good soul food/southern restaurants (if any) in the area? Also any good burger places?

I was also wondering if I should bring my car along with me too, or just rely on public transportation?

st johns is located in one of the nicest areas in queens. the neighborhood jamaica estates has some of the most exclusive areas. Yeah if you go south towars hillside, jamiaca avennues it gets bad but st johns is nowhere near those areas.

I bet the university has a "student safety" office or something who'll be able to answer your questions. perhaps they even have a printed brochure (which might have eatery/restaurant recommendations too. You can also try yelp dot com slash nyc to learn about eateries/restaurants, dentists, automotive shops, everything). As others have said, the bad areas aren't near the university.
