yes, it does. There were some huge waves last week when the hurricane was going up the east coast. September in general is also a time when waves are huge.

Don't listen to Brain. Sorry. The waves don't get nothing like Rocaway or Sandy Hook, NJ. It doesn't get anything like most beaches in Long Island or Jersey Shore as well. I surf, and I've NEVER been surfing or seen anyone surf at Coney Island. The waves can be big to a certain point but they just aren't as constant as Rockaway or Sandy Hook. When I go to Coney Island I go to just jump off the pier and swim back to sure.

Nagme, you can also get to Rocaway by train as well. It's also nicer than Coney Island in my opinion with all the new home developements they are making. I will admit that Rocaway still has the projects and some parts are a bit sketchy but the same can be said for Coney Island-I think Coney Island is worst, though its getting better SLOWLY but it's coming along. Rockaways new beach fronts though are beautiful especially the more up you go towards Beach 116 and above. By train, Rocaway is definitely more of journey though depending on which side of Rocaway you're living in and depending on how much you go into Manhattan or other boroughs.

You could look at the subway map.

Or you could just take the A train heading towards Far Rockaway.

Incidentally, the reason why Coney Island doesn't get the same kind of waves as the Rockaways does is pretty simple: Coney doesn't front directly on the open ocean. It's more like Gravesend Bay. That's also why you don't see anywhere near as many interesting seashells on the beach at Coney.
