Shake Shack is a good option on a crumby day when most of the tourists have been scared indoors. No way in hell I'm waiting more than 15 minutes for one though.

I went to the one on 44th Street, total time in the place including wait time and eating was a half-hour and this was on a late Saturday afternoon in July.

Sugar Sweet Sunshine is one of my favorite bakeries, and has the cheapest cupcakes I've seen out of all the bakeries I've been to in the city. However, my top favorite bakery that is absolutely delectable is Billy's Bakery on 9th Ave between 21st and 22nd Sts. Everything I've had from there is yummy, but I think their cakes are what really shine! A slice of cake is pricey at almost $5, but it's such a huge slice that you won't be able to finish it off, and is definitely an entire meal in and of itself.

Not to hijack the OP's thread entirely, but I've found that slices are the way to go at most of these bakeries. There's something much more satisfying about them, for whatever reason. Having said that, Amy's Bread at Leroy and Bleecker has the best slice of cake I've found.

Oh my god, Amy's Bread. A friend is in charge of birthday cakes for all and she always brings a piece of heaven from Amy's. As much as I like Billy (who is now Jane and used to work at Magnolia), Amy's bread does in fact blow them all away when it comes to cake. But then, why should it be a competition. I would happily eat cake from any of them - except Magnolia - the frosting is way too sweet.

I think I need to go to Chelsea Market tomorrow and hit up Amy's and Fat Witch for some brownies...

The best burgers for take out in new york are at a place called Goodburger. They are fabuolous, in part, because they are big, not skimply little peices of meat like SS. Best of all, unless you ask for something different, they're always cooked medium so they're juicy and pink on the inside. (Well-done beef is an affront to humanity in my book). For $6.50 its the best burger in town. Outposts in midtown west, midtwon east and down near wwall street i know for a fact. there may be others.

and there are no waits to get in. (but you do wait for your burger because its not precooked).

I second that. I've seen Goodburger but haven't tried it.

Agree on the well-done beef. I've been at nice steak restaurants with people who order a good steak and then ask for it well done. To me, that means translates to "Please bring me this nice juicy piece of meat...ruined."
