Like a poster above mentioned, Queens, for example, has tons and tons of obese people.
So I don't think we can say NYC successfully makes people stay thin. It provides plenty of opportunity, but it never is leveraged fully by its residents

Obviously there are many parts where theres a majority of overweight/obese people (Harlem, Bed-Stuy, the Rockaways, parts of the Bronx, etc) but when comparing to the car-dominated parts of the US (the deep south, the midwest, etc), theres just no comparison. Example: NYC's obesity rate: 22.3%, Memphis' obesity rate: 35.2%, or, NYC's Overweight percentage: 53.4%, Miami's Overweight percentage: 65.8%.
