I saw this commercial on the news yesterday.

Quote:
Barbara Pierce Bush was born at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.[1] When the family lived in the Preston Hollow section of Dallas, she and her twin sister, Jenna, attended Preston Hollow Elementary School; Laura Bush served on Preston Hollow's Parent Teachers Association at that time.[2] Later, she and Jenna attended The Hockaday School in Dallas. When her father became Governor of Texas in 1994, Barbara attended St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Austin, Texas. In 1996, Barbara began attending Austin High School, graduating with the class of 2000.[3]
Barbara Pierce Bush - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Why is she on television calling herself a New Yorker when she was born and raised in Dallas Texas?

Does living in New York City for a handful of years automatically give someone the right to call themselves a New Yorker?

I have always been under the assumption such a title is only given to those who were actually born and raised in NY.

If a New Yorker from the Bronx moved down to Texas and started calling themselves a Texan, trust me that would not go over to well down there.

So why is there a double standard when it comes to NYC?

If I ever hear somebody in DC calling themselves a Washingtonian you had best believe I am going to question them about it. Such a title should only be reserved to those who are actually from DC.

What do you think?

ahem. What does your Senator call herself? I think it's funny. If you wanna be, then be. Can't be any better or worse than the natives, and I'll just take it as a compliment that you wanna be like me.

Well speaking only for myself, and I didn't watch the video, but I would never live in a city for 2-3 years and then claim to be "from" there. I'd probably say "I'm a NY'er currently living in blahblah." JMO

None of you are native New Yorkers.

Signed the Native Americans.

MStant1, although on the surface your statement seems correct, upon further analysis it is clearly wrong. Native Americans were never native New Yorkers, because New York did not exist prior to Europeans. Native Americans simply occupied the land, and upon selling to Europeans and leaving, only then did New York come to existence. Native Americans were gone, and native New Yorkers subsequently were the Europeans, slaves, etc who moved to New York.

Well none of the cities/towns technically existed when we took it from them....silly argument really.

Based on your argument calling the early natives "native americans" is probably a misnomer as well.
