Another update, for fun. I dredged up this thread because of another discussion in the NYC forum and a lot has changed since my last update.
newtoli, that was really excellent advice. My wife (we got married!
) applied to FIT and got in, so she starts this fall. I think we'll have to pay out-of-state tuition for the first semester, but she should qualify for in-state for the spring semester. You are right, it is much, much cheaper than all of the other schools, which I think would have been prohibitively expensive.
It is a very competitive industry, but we've been very lucky. My wife found an internship at a design firm near where I work, and she was the assistant to the owner who is a very well respected designer (think top 100, has articles written about her in the NY Times, has a rolodex full of celebrities). They really enjoyed having my wife for the three month internship and invited her to come back next summer after her first year of school. She got a lot of really valuable experience and we're really excited about her future.
NYC has been really good to both of us. I hope this thread will serve as an inspiration to other people looking to relocate to NYC for similar reasons. Things could not have gone better for us.
