What are the best neighborhoods for a young female? 20 yr old single female student. My budget $800-1200/a month for rent. I don't mind commutes and have a diver's license.

Looking for safe, clean friendly neighborhood. Want to experience all of what NY has to offer to me. Interested in nightlife, meeting people, and great food.

I used to love living on 6th Street and 1st Ave - Tons of restaurants/bars. Parks and lots of places to find something to do/people watch - I think in your price range you may be able to get a roommate or studio - it was safe in as much as no one ever robbed me- or didn I feel threatened and I worked overnight so I was in the street at very early hours of the AM - It is crowded and noisy on weekends - but the trade off is living in the center of it all.

Astoria seems a bit pricey. Is it safe to walk alone at night there?

Your $800-$1200 is your part of a share, right? You will have more opportunity to find something safe, clean, friendly that has great food, nightlife and "all of what NY has to offer." Yes, it's possible to find a $1200 studio in a safe neighborhood but it's probably going to be quiet and safe, not in the middle of NY's best nightlife.

Astoria is actually a very good suggestion for a 20 year old who is looking for what you are looking for. It's not pricey as far as things go around here.

And having a driver's license will not help you with commuting since you will be taking the subway (assuming you are commuting into Manhattan).

Astoria is just about your cheapest safe option in all of NYC. If that's too pricey.....NYC probably won't work out for you.

Astoria is safe, has great food, and is a great option for you, but you won't find anything cheaper than $1200 for a decent sized, well located studio here (the ones you see on Craigslist for $800 in Astoria will be a bus ride to the subway station... not worth it in my opinion, and it's just an added hassle).

How long (in minutes) are you willing to commute one-way? Also, where are you commuting to? I would recommend concentrating your search on a convenient subway line, and if possible, an express line which will get you to the city faster.

I am only willing to commute 30 mins if that is possible. The college is in Queens and I will be working in NYC.

Queens is NYC, dear. NYC consists of five boroughs, not just Manhattan.
