I want to know if the area of Far Rockaway by St. John's Episcopal Hospital is safe. I'm thinking of possible taking a position at the hospital, but I'm concerned about the safety of the neighborhood. Does anyone know if this area is safe?

Not really, there are a couple of decent blocks but you are basically surrounded by low income, high crime neighborhoods. The areas of Bayswater & the section to the east near the Nassau border are occupied mostly by hasidic Jews. Shopping is basically non-existant around there too. There are some small low budget shops along Beach 20th St.

If you decide to take the job I would recommend looking up in Rockaway Park, Belle Harbor or into Five Towns (Nassau side) for a place to live. You will also need to go into Five Towns for your shopping also. There is a Costco on Rockway Turnpike just over the Nassau border.

the blocks surrounding st. johns are the ghetto but not exactly crime central. around the hospital is an average hood. many people doing their residency live in wavecrest. just dont flash anything of value in the street (which is common street smarts for anyplace you're at) and you'll be ok. you'll see guys hanging on the corners sometimes but they wont mess with you if u you look like you're going about your business. late at night however the streets are very desolated. it can intimidate but if you take the job you may get used to it. bottom line maybe you may want to take a walk around the area and see for yourself. i may be a bit biased cause i've lived there for over 25 years.

Default The Rock

Understand that the "rule" for Rockaway is anything east of the 70's is pretty rough territory but if you keep your wits about you that isn't the worst spot.
Just stay away from Peninsula Hospital. I was born there and my dad worked there for tears. They used to have to escort the nurses out to their cars after their shifts for protection. Just think safe and smart and you should be fine. Also there is a good amount of refurbishing going on in Far Rockaway nowdays(Thank God) so hopefully in the next few years it should be better

Smile Far Rockaway Queens

First of all to ask that question is the ultimate racist question .It is because you see black people around the hospital that you assume that it is not safe, you should know that most of tha black people living in FAR rockaway not rockaway itself are middle class just like most black areas in southestern queens, with a majority coming from jamaica & the west indies,as well as a large central american & mexican working class population.Ofcourse it is the last stop on the A train ,so ofcourse you get some riffraff ,you get that on any last stop of a major subway line.By the way Far rockaway is also a community which is connected to one of the wealthiest communities on the east coast ,& the south shore of long island the ritzy Five Towns ,five minutes away from the hospital by car ,where the shops are on par with Madison Ave ,& Bevery hills. The area called West Lawrence is a 2 minute drive where homes begin at $500,000 & up,you have the wealthy enclave of Bayswater which is a five minute drive ,yes these areas are practically all white & jewish ,however still part of the area.So if someone recomends that you should look at Rockaway itself, not far rockaway, they are building homes as well as attracting mostly artists from manhattan that are fed up with high rents. The unkool areas are Lynbrook & rockaway park ,which are just plain simple areas on different sides of far rockaway with rockaway park being the tackiest of the two.As far as transportation you cant beat Far rockaway with a direct great subway line into downtown brooklyn ,lower manhattan, midtown all under one hour & continuing to the upper west side alll the way to the tip of the Bronx ,all for $2.Ofcourse you can take the expensive LIRR,to save more time to PENN STATION.The shopping of LAWRENCE &CEDARHURST & well as the fine resteraunts will satisfy your palate as well.

Why is asking if an area is safe, such as Far Rockaway, a racist question? Would you deny that the 101 Precinct has its share of crime problems? He did not mention the race of people in the area or even insinuate that minorities had anything to do with it.

Why is Lynbrook & Rock Park "unkool" and tacky?? Oh, they are just "plain simple areas"... what does that mean? That was a rambling, nonsensical post that degraded a whole bunch of neighborhoods that are pretty much better than the area around St John's Hosp. And apparently the others who posted on the thread would disagree with you, too.

My intention is not to offend anyone ,but you as well as I know that you would not be asking the same question about ,bay ridge or Forest hills, like I said the last stop on the A train makes it a little lets`just say undesirable, but that would go for any NYC neighborhood,& yes the proximity to the exclusive Five Towns & having Bayswater & West Lawrence part of Far Rockaway ,make the area a desirable community.Lybrook & Rockaway Park ,are just two areas of the far rockaway five towns ,one to the east the other to the west that are less desirable.Rockaway Park is a lower class community of bars & bars,& more bars & you cannot find a stabucks or Barnes & Noble for miles ,not like Far rockaways backyard Cedarhurst that has all of the above.Lynbrook is a solid boring working class community simple homes ,better than Rockaway Park by miles ,but I would pick Far Rockaway Five towns & even Valley Stream over those two.

Well, I guess "to each his own"... I disagree with you on just about every point. From my vantage point, I would not feel comfortable living in the area of St John's Hospital unless I were a very religious Jew or Black person. Maybe that makes me racist or realist?

Far Rockaway is low-income and LOW-crime! Broke doesn't imply criminal.

I think Far Rockaway is a great place to live, especially if you are on a budget. Being able to walk to the beach every morning if you want to is great! My only pet peeve is the distance from Manhattan. Its really hard to meet up with people in the city, simply b/c it takes so long. I am neither jewish nor black, but latina and I feel comfortable walking home from the train station even in the wee hours of the morning.
