Once you get approved for an appartment with NYCHA I know you have to pay a security deposit but do you have to pay the security deposit PLUS the one month of rent? Or is it just the security deposit?

Default usually with

regulated apartments you pay one month's security plus the first month's rent upon signing the lease. this is what i did when i moved into a rent stabilized building

when i lived in a co- op bldg it wasn't subject to certain city rent laws so i paid two month's security, plus the first month's rent

You have to pay the security deposit and first months rent...I moved into my nycha apt 5 months ago, and they literally only gave me a week to come up with the money even though the apartment was not ready..it took them damn near two months to make all the repairs, yet they wanted their money in a week.

I received the letter confirming that I am eligible for a 2BR apt. my question now is how long will it take for the apt to become available?

It depends on how much work they have to do. They do some standards fixing (eg. plumbing, electricity, painting, tiles).
