The sad part is that it probably is. I bet blue regrets posting that now. I wanted to scream "BROWN NOSE" at the top of my lungs when I read that. People can say I'm hating. I'm not. I find it really pathetic. I feel I've had to lower my standards enough by living in NYC and I'm not about to lower them even more.
I don't think the girl may have done that. She may have a different form of story. I think blue misrepresented what was told to her or she misunderstood completely.
Besides I find it appalling people are paid 35-40K in this area. It's kind of criminal to exploit someone that way.
I previously considered moving to S.I. and everyone would object and tell me how horrid the commute is, that there's only one way out, that it's "boring" lol. I could care less about that. The only reason I didn't move there is because I heard you had to take the ferry every day to get in and out. Too bad they don't build a bridge connecting S.I. to Manhattan and Brooklyn ...or have they? lol
Bing, there is a bridge connection SI to Brooklyn (the Verrazano) and believe it or not, the commute to Manhattan on the express bus is not bad at all. I live right by the Verrazano and my commute to midtown is about 45 minutes each way, and it's easy, just get on one mode of transportation. The ferry is an option too, but not one that I am fond of at all.

But how much extra do you pay in transportation? 45 minutes isn't bad..pretty standard if anything

That's the catch, the express bus is $5.50 each way. I buy the weekly express bus metrocard which costs $50.00, so you end up saving some, but it's still expensive.

About $96 more in transportation, per month, but I wonder if you save a lot more by living in S.I., as I'm pretty sure the rents are cheaper right?

Yes, much cheaper and the neighborhoods are pretty nice for the most part. I pay $900 for a one bedroom which is pretty standard for SI. I had a friend that really lucked out and got a gorgeous one bedroom in a really nice area, and she paid $750. But that's a rarity.

i have the metro unlimited subway pass that runs around $104.oo dollars a month ..to me it worth it because i can go anywhere i want and not have to worry about haveing enough money to get me home if i do overspend in a bookstore i go to alot with my credit card ..
Long ago when I worked in real estate, I had a guy call me up about renting an apartment. You all know the drill, needing 40x the monthly rent, stellar credit history, references, w2's, blah blah blah... So I started rattling off what documentation we'd need in order to get the ball rolling. The red flags start rearing their heads, so I start asking questions.
Turns out the guy was from Las Vegas looking to relocate, he was offered a job in NYC for 40k and he actually thought it was a "great salary"
*cough*
But wait... there's more....
He had a family of 4- three kids and a wife (who would not have a job lined up upon relocating, she didn't have a degree either).
And of course they wanted a 4 bedroom in G.Vill newly renovated with a washer and dryer inside the unit for under $1000 a month. Riiiiiiight....
I begged the guy to do more research on the cost of living differences between Vegas and NYC. I did everything I could to let him know taking that job would be the biggest mistake of his life. The guy wouldn't be able to feed his kids if he relocated. I never spoke to him again, probably because the truth wasn't what he wanted to hear, so I don't know if I got through to the poor guy.

I wish more people had guts like you. The guts to tell it like it is. That guy should have been making 80k for everything he wanted lol. Perhaps even more.
