I have a friend moving to new york city in a couple of weeks and she's asked me to do some research for her.

SHe basically wants to discover the real NYC! Not just the regular tourist traps, but what it's like to be a new yorker as she will be one herself.

She has an apartment on Park Avenue up towards the lower east side but doesn't mind travelling a bit around the city, but she'll be using public transport.

Has anyone got any ideas for her?

Thanks

The "so called" real NYC is different things to different people. For me, it's the UN-gentrified neighborhoods of what people refer to as the outer boroughs.

She has plenty of time to explore if she's moving here. I would suggest organizing her trips to different neighborhoods around food or sports (walking or biking) depending on her interests. If she organizes around food, all she has to do is read some online sites like chowhound and the local food blogs like Edible Queens, Eating in Translation and Jeffrey Tastes. Then choose a place to eat in an out of the way neighborhood, and voila, you have the destination and the exploring organizes around that.

Also, the NY Times has a general interest blog roll (scroll down on the right side to People and Neighborhoods) Metro - City Room Blog - NYTimes.com

I'm sure once she starts her job/school/whatever and makes friends she will fall into a pattern of what will be "real nyc" to her.

When I first moved here we had a lot of local spots around our school to go to. Then when I started work we would have happy hour in midtown near our office. It all depends on what neighborhood your life is centered around.

Park Avenue isn't anywhere near the Lower East Side--which could be potentially important if she's really interested in knowing where she's living.
