I am moving to a studio in the Deerfield in Riverside Drive in Harlem. The neighborhood looked good and I really like the vicinity of the Riverbank State park, plus the 145th 1 train subway is less than 500 ft. I will be working in Columbia University and might get late (10 or 11 pm) to get back from work occasionally. Did I make the right choice?
Hard to know, you will find out what you can deal with as you live there.
I have friends who are leaving (running from, actually) 148th and RSD because they could not stand the neighborhood. Broadway is quite seedy in areas, 135th is not good at all, lots of social service housing around. There is also a major amenities problem.
You should be careful in the park. There are apparently robberies, not sure why these are not discussed more.
But it depends what you want and what you think is tolerable.
