I was just back from an overseas trip several time zones away and suffering jetlag. My brother called me and said, "Turn on the TV!" When I said, "What channel?" he said, "ANY channel!" and I knew it was bad, very bad. I turned on the TV and saw the second tower go down and cried.
I was in Prague. I was just going to check some local news on my computer and I saw my sister was interviewed about our brother being missing. I was calling people like crazy only to find out two more close friends were also missing.

I was 12 in 8th grade living in new orleans, no one was in the cafeteria like they normally are and someone told me a plane hit the WTC(we had one in new orleans so i assumed they meant ours) but then i went upstairs and saw it was new york and as i was talking midsentence about "wow thats crazy" the second plane hit and we all started screaming hysterically
I was half-asleep on the stairmaster at the gym in my bldg when I heard a collective gasp. Saw everyone glued to the tv screeen and that's when I saw a close-up of a bldg with a big gaping hole and smoke coming out of it. I remember being really confused and thought I was seeing a scene from a movie. I recall the words plane and accident being tossed around. And as I was saying to myself that looks like the twin towers, the camera zoomed out to show both towers. My eyes remained glued to the screen and that's when I saw the 2nd tower hit & suddenly knew along with everybody else, oh, this was no accident.
I finished my workout & saw people congregating near the entrance & that's when my doorman informed us that the Pentagon was also hit. The day got progressively worse with one bad news after another. All these rumors were going around i.e. they're going to hit Radio City Music Hall next, Rockfeller Ctr is going to be bombed, etc. I remember walking to work (going uptown on 5th avenue) and seeing everybody looking downtown (from 5th Avenue you could see the towers plainly). You could smell the stench of smoke & hear the noise of sirens and it looked like the whole world was headed downtown.

From your post, I can't tell if your brother and friends were found- but I am sure hoping they were (?)
I was in Westchester County, NY and completely oblivious when it first happened. I was in my car on my way to work, cursing out the traffic and listening to a CD (so no news.)
I got to work and a coworker in the rest room asked me if I heard about "that plane that hit that building." I assumed, no- HOPED it was a Cessna or something that got too close. Got to my desk, only to find out that was no Cessna and it was no accident. My coworkers and I turned on the AM radio news, and it just went downhill from there- the second tower, the Pentagon...
We ran to the conference room with the TV on to see the towers falling. Started crying when my mind caught up to the fact that it was real.
