That area is mixed, but it's improving. Most of the crime is gang on gang bull***. I would go there and take a look around before you take anyone's advice - good or bad. See what the walk is like to/ from the subway station.
I live one stop from there - off the Wilson Stop, and before I moved anyone I asked who knew the area warned me NOT to move there. I've been here for a year now, and have acclimated very well, and I haven't had any problems at all. I live two blocks from the subway which I'm sure helps. I can't believe how many young people have moved to the area in the last year. Blows my mind how fast it's all changing. Young girls of every color are coming and going in the subway at all hours. My neighbors are friendly for the most part. There has been crime in the area - but for the most part it has been gang or domestic violence or shady characters hurting / mugging each other. You just use your head and don't be too flashy and mind your business, and it's been fine.
@ tkak I think she lives not too far from where you are... She said she lives by Central along the L line I believe... I must admit though passing by the other day, I gotta agree with you that the area has gotten much better. I mean don't get me wrong I still wouldn't advise people to move here cause I think it's stupid to move into what is still considered a high crime area but nevertheless I can see why what used to be considered "No man's land" on the Wilson stop has become more attractive in recent years... Even 5 years ago, I would have to keep my guard up at all times in the daytime... But in reference to the area she is talking about that's a little further down and a bit more shady... The hipster movement seems to be concentrated strictly along the L line and while the place she is referring to is near to train access, the movement hasn't spread there yet...
