Heading to Manhattan with my teenage son early Sunday afternoon. We definitely plan to see Ground Zero and go to Times Square. What are some other things we should check out? Preferably free! We will have about 5 hours there. Also, I assume the best way to get around is by subway. Should we just pay per ride, or is there some type of pass that would be better?

Skip times square, it is a tourist trap and not worth the time.

What are your interests and your son's interests? I can advise better if I know more about what the two of you enjoy.

I would get a day pass instead of paying per ride if you intend to see multiple places in one day.

If you are planning to see Ground Zero, I would suggest that you walk over to the Staten Island ferry (which isn't too far away). Taking the ferry is free and you get an excellent view of the Statue of Liberty from the boat.

From Times Square you can walk over to the Main Building of the NYC Public Library on 5th Avenue (between 40th-42nd Streets). The building is open on Sunday afternoons and on the 3rd floor there are several art exhibits which are free (see Stephen A. Schwarzman Building | The New York Public Library | The New York Public Library).

If you plan on going to the memorial, you need to get passes in advance:
National September 11 Memorial & Museum

I disagree with Times Square. If they haven't been to NY before, they will enjoy seeing it. It doesn't have to be a tourist trap. But seeing the lights and the crowds is exciting to many tourists, as much as some locals avoid it.

I agree with listing interests - museums? architecture? food? With only 5 hours there aren't too many options. Do you want to see the main highlights - (times square, Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, Grand Central, etc) - or something different?

It depends on what they like: if they really want to see the flashy lights, tourist souvenir stores and chain restaurants then cool, yeah, sure, go see it. If not the city has much more to offer.

Madison Square Garden. Historic large arena.

Thanks for all the feedback!

I'm thinking more along the lines of the major landmarks. I've been to Manhattan a handfull of times but that was back in the 80's. As was posted above, the Staten Island Ferry might be a good idea. Any idea how long the round trip takes?

Also, does anyone have a restaurant recommendation?

Which neighborhood are you planning to be in when it's time to eat? There's so many, the location will help narrow it down.

And price range ($-$$$$) and environment (casual/pub to upscale) helps too. There's so many great places!
