Read about the plan to tear down a money losing garage that's part of the Yankee Stadium complex and put in a new full -service hotel in its place. Not some little dinky Days Inn or the like, but one with a conference center, sit down restaurant and presumably no plexiglass between the night clerk and the customers.
I'm the first to want good things for the Bronx, but this seems like a terrible idea. Who would come? Getting upscale busienss types to the South Bronx for a meeting instead of a ballgame seems unlikely. And the place might even do decent business during the season, but the off-season? And if the garage is going broke and you can't even get people to park there, why do you think people would want to sleep there? Just seems to me that its throwing good money after bad.
But I'm curious what people who know the Bronx better than I do think.

That's it right there. Sports-related sites around the country have been steadily increasing in popularity as meeting/convention destinations in the past 10 years. I'm in that business and pretty much every such facility is doing well, including ones that are riding the coattails of teams that aren't 1/10th as storied as the Yankees.

This will be a winner in all likelihood.
I think I agree.There is a lot more going on and planned to be going on at the new Yankee Stadium complex than baseball games.It's being promoted as a conference and trade show center as well as a concert venue among other things.It was also designed to accommodate football games and has been used for a few already.Televangelist Joel Osteen has already used the stadium for a revival.

You have to do stuff like this in order to slowly make things better. If not people will always think the Bronx is a sh**hole...
My knee jerk reaction is like many people...are they crazy? But the reality is Yankee Stadium is not just a baseball stadium anymore, but is transforming into a business driver with football games, trade shows, etc. The entire area is becoming a destination, and not just for a yankee game, and having a top tier hotel will solidify its place as a true destination for sports and business.
That new hotel will do very well, and it won't take Yankee Stadium for that to happen (baseball isn't a 12-month phenomenon, anyway). It will succeed because it's near a Metro North station, as well as an exit off the Major Deegan. Commuters will use it as a stopover.
A couple of new hotels and inns in Brooklyn, near the Gowanus Expressway in Sunset Park, defied conventional wisdom and have succeeded for these reasons. So I expect a hotel in the Bronx to do just as well.

Lol you should try and ask the city to clean up willets point which is far more worse and run down than the Yankee Stadium area, come on you have packs of stray dogs walking around citi fields. As for the Hotel by Yankee stadium? Stuff like that has been in the talks for years, I remmeber one time some developer wanted to open a hotel and a casino next to yankee stadium and also place a dome on top of the stadium. Yankee Stadium is a huge tourist attraction its probably one of the biggest tourists attraction outside of Manhattan and also many other venues take place at Yankee Stadium. It would make sense to at least build a hotel in that area compared to having sportsmen, tourist, press guys, journalist being stuck in Manhattan traffic and subway system all day! Hot
