I don't really see that happening anywhere in the tri-state area man. Probably not even Newark.

You can maybe MAYBE find that in a far flung area of the Bronx, like Wakefield, Edenwald, or Olinville.

That's not going to be an easy task OP. I wish I had some solid advise, but I don't. Good luck and keep us posted here on how things turn out.

Public housing if you qualify--but that's your only option I think.

Well the new affordable housing initiative, depending on their salary and credit, is another option.

You will have a much better chance if you are willing to consider what is known as a junior 4 apartment. These are legally(and often advertised as) 1 br's but have an extra room, usually designed as a small dining room, that most people these days use either as a home office/den or 2nd bedroom. They are usually small(8x10) and don't have closets but with an armoire and a little ingenuity can easily be a bedroom.

Sometimes they are set up so that the entrance to these rooms is only directly from the kitchen or living room but if look hard enough you can probably find one that is off of the foyer which allows access without going through the living room or kitchen.

There is a pretty good supply of these type apartments in The Bronx because they tend to be prevalent in 1930's buildings which is when most of The Bronx apartment buildings were built.
With a little effort you might actually find one of these apartments for around 1,000 or 1,100/mo in Bronx neighborhoods like Norwood and Bedford Park, which are much nicer(and safer) than Edenwald, Crotona Park and Olinville.

Another option would be to look for an apartment in a divided house, which could mean a basement apartment (as long as it's legal -- verify with the city), and you may find that in Queens. Sometimes you can find comparative deals in very good neighborhoods, but the trade-off is the basement living space. You may also find that in areas of Northern New Jersey, such as Fort Lee, which can be pretty convenient to get to the 1 subway via bus to the GW Bridge Bus Terminal.

I agree with bluedog2 that Bedford Park, especially closer to the upper Grand Concourse and Mosholu Parkway, and Norwood are better areas to consider in the Bronx. I am not sure if you could find something in Kingsbridge (not the Heights, west of the Deegan) or VanCortlandt Village at that price point, but it might be possible in a divided house.
