During the 70s the area was mostly Jewish and also Italian west of white plains road. I used to have a high school teacher who used to live on eastchester road and that was her childhood home. Shes also Jewish. One of her students live in that exact same house she grew up in and that student was Jamaican.
Yes, there were Jews in that area as well. Many went to Temple in the Pelham Parkway area. But it was mostly Irish, Italian, Greek, and various others. I had an Aunt who lived there, and her two kids went to Spellman High School (Catholic High School with a great reputation) which was close to the Edenwald projects. By 1973 there was a lot of change going on and many of the Jews in that part of the Bronx hightailed it Co-op City. Could not stand the decline in public order and safety.
i ask cause when i lived in Rockland County we had italian neighbors who moved up in 1974 from the area I describe. i think they used to say the area was changing so they moved tho co-workers i work with (I work in Wakefield currently) say the area changed in the early 80's
We use to live in the area around St. James Park and Poe Park. It was mostly Irish with about 25% Jewish/Italian. We moved in the late 70s, got to dangerous and uncivil. Go back now its horrible.
Wakefield was largely stable for a long time, but block by block the brown tide grew and the white beach was eroded, leaving only ruins.
I work on E 239th street by the train yards. it's crummy over there but you still have some nice houses with some long time Italian residents left and you can see them tending to their lawns and gardens. It's better over by the Mt St Michael's school where the houses are even bigger and it's better kept(tho i heard of a stabbing on Nereid Avenue by the school a few months ago)
yes that E 194th street area and the surrounding blocks has been bad since the 80's
Yes, the Italians in general are very good about keeping their homes and neighborhoods clean and orderly. I am half Italian, other half Irish. It's funny, but a few years before I was born it was considered a mixed marriage! Crazy. Oh well, its a shame that so much of the Bronx was ruined by liberals. Notice there are not in the Bronx now, they ran to Long Island or Westchester to escape the impact of their social experiments....
And you my friend, have a joyous St. Pats Day!
