.From the intense drug trade east of the Grand Concourse, to the heavy gang presence to the west. There are even pockets north of Bedford Park Blvd that resemble the South Bronx. Look at Hull Ave north of Mosholo Pkwy for example. The buildings are in **** condition and the drug trade is flourishing
I've noticed the same thing. As you move more towards the west, there seems to be more gangs. More to the east and you have more drug dealers. While both areas have a large amount of both, why does this division take place?
Fordham-Bedford went down hill years ago. In fact the process started early as the the 1950/60's. By the late 70's the area was already shot but it didn't become a complete dump until crack hit in the mid 80's. That was the nail in the coffin.

I have to disagree with you on that my friend, I was a teen around that time and the Fordham Rd of the 60's, the area was ALL white and middle class working people from Fordham to Bedford, the apt houses were clean, taken care of you could sit in Poe Park on any given night and not be afraid of anything. I don't recall any major crimes in the area at that time. The area was mostly Jewish/Irish/German. If you were living anywhere in the area at that time 50/60's you couldn't possibly make that statement.
Agree with Songbird. I was there from 83 to 87 and Fordham Road was gone. But Bedford Park was alive and kicking. The neighborhood started to get better around 194th if my memory is correct.
I remember a friend and got bombed at French Charlie's Pub on Mosholu. We walked back down to Fordham Road along Marion Ave and stopped to mark the point where it all began to go to hell. There literally was a dividing line down to the building. Now its all gone.
Neighborhoods can go through cycles, which is something Hustla doesn't seem to comprehend. What was up can go down and back up again. Perhaps it won't get better--who knows--but some of the prewar, Deco housing stock there are like diamonds in the rough. They just don't build 'em or design 'em like they used to, and some of the facades and lobbies are one of a kind, straight up gorgeous. That's one reason pre-war Upper West Side buildings (even those that had once gone to rot) now fetch millions.
The thing is the Bronx isn't much more convenient to wall street or midtown than Long Island, New Jersey, or Westchester. Add to that a MASSIVE number of immigrants, crime and drugs and you have a neighborhood that people work to get out of, not move into.
Moth--I've noticed that Valentine Ave south of Bedford Pk seems particularly rough--south of about 198th seems like it's everyone hanging out, blasting boom boxes, graffiti all over the buildings, 196th and down is SEVERELY bad and even worse; however Bainbridge Ave seems more mellow and not quite as "hangout-ish", maybe more dignified, unless it's all appearances, and both avenues are equally as bad.
i agree about the style and design on some of the buildings on the main strip of the concourse. they are unique and have a nice classic look. the problem is, those buildings are in horrible areas that are very densely populated. its a little calmer and quieter at the northern fringe of the concourse.

ANY ideas or opinions?
I agree. I passed through Valentine and 184th once and the whole block was full of people hanging out. Valentine is an awful awful block.
I visited Bedford Park with my digital camera in June of this year, and I found the neighborhood as pleasant as can be. Maybe at night time it is a different story, but during the day, it looks fine to walk around. I sure love the architecture there. Look for yourself.
