It's a cake job and a very desireable one. It offers a very good starting salary and benefits. You would need to score very high to get called and even then be prepared for a long wait. They don't hire quickly off the lists like nypd does because it's much smaller. If you are college educated the written exam should be no problem.
A family member is considering applying for this. I don't know too much about it. I'm curious if anyone on the board could tell me more about this line of work. What it's like on a day to day basis, pay, benefits, etc. Any info would be appreciated.
Yeah, it's a cake job until you have to wrestle some skell at the bus terminal, face down a robbery suspect armed with a gun on the PATH train or get trapped in a building that has been struck by terrorists. Remember it is the same bullet that can kill you wearing any uniform. They earn their money.
My opinion one of the best law enforcement jobs in the country and definitely in tri the state, strickly talking salary...and i dont want to hear about suffolk. Im one of those that ray kelly refused to release my work history to papd. There are no resident restrictions and facilities all over... and dont listen to the ones that say its boring...be bored counting your $$ all the way to the bank. BE SAFE ALL!
One of the best jobs in law enforcement. Someone had commented that several NYPD officers had a lawsuit going on regarding the NYPD failing to release their job history to PAPD. They lost that lawsuit some time ago.
I'll give you an example of why so many NYPD cops would LOVE to leave their earn years of service time that does not lateral over. A friend of mines who had 7 years as a transit cop took the job. When she had overtime at Laguardia Airport, Port Authority PD not only paid for her hotel stay, but for her meal as well. With just one year being on the job with PAPD, she was at her top salary where she was with NYPD. Plenty of overtime.
I'm sorry to blow up the PAPD guys but it's a GOOD job. There is a drawback though. Unlike NYPD where the recruits are able to go home everyday, the PAPD recruits stay overnight at the academy and can leave on the weekends. It may have changed although I still think it's still the same.

The PAPD is an excellent job. They have police powers in both NY & NJ and patrol any PA of NY & NJ facilty. These would inlcude most of the metropolitan area airports, bus terminals, PATH train, WTC site. Their union is very strong and they have very good benefits, excellent salary & an astronomical amount of overtime (if wanted).
There have been 42 PAPD officers killed in the line of duty, including 37 at the WTC attacks.
As a retired 30 year PAPD officer I agree with the majority of what you said. IF the OP can get in, do so. It's not easy and depends on when a test is given and how many take it. If I recall correctly 11,000 took the last test and 7,000 went on the list.
When I retired 12 years ago base pay was $72,000. I would think it is higher than the $83,000 someone quoted at the 5th year on the job.
Pay is lower than some NJ state small towns but the benefits far outweigh what any other Police Dept has especially medical, dental and the fact that you don't pay into your pension OR your medical benefits which is huge. I am Tier I so the latter tiers may be somewhat different. The same applies after retirement, full medical and dental and life insurance remains intact at 2.5 x the base salary. $5 co pay for in network MD's, 80 percent out of network until you hit $1000 out of pocket for that year then 100 percent is reimbursed fairly fast. Prescriptions are $2 generic, $5 name brand.
O/T is whatever you opt to work normally up to 800 hours of O/T per year. During 911 O/T was mandatory 7 days a week 16 hours a day initially. There was no cap of 800 hours per year at that time of course.
I did work 911 as a First Responder but so did the NYPD and NYFD. The PAPD had the largest loss in PERCENTAGE of their officers on 911. I had been in the academy with many lost that day and worked with about half may they ALL RIP.

I never remained at the academy overnight or weekends and never heard of anyone who did. Other than that, you're spot on.

Not a "cake job" at all. I worked my butt off and missed weekends and most holidays with my family the majority of the time. Starting pay is lower than it should be year 1 but is at max by the 5th year. College education required is an Associates not a Bachelor Degree. If you majored in Criminal Justice, it makes it more enticing for hiring. You don't have to be a the absolute top of the test scoring but you want to do as well as possible so study whatever you can about NY and NJ law as PA Officers do have State Police Powers in both states. Use COMMON SENSE and be HONEST!!!
Port Authority is VERY pro Affirmative Action so if you are of any minority status they do want minorities and tend to promote minority officers (including females) easier than the Caucasian Officer.

And this is different from, say, the NYPD, how? Now if we were talking PAPD vs Nassau of Suffolk county on LI, it might be a little different.
