I will move to Bronx early next month from Texas. I have only visited NYC one time and don't know how early should I start to look for an apartment? I want to live in Little Italy area which is close to my work, is that a safe area to live? Should I rent a temporary apartment first then look for a good one? Is that possible to rent a apartment without taking a look? Thanks.

I wouldn't rent an apartment anywhere in NYC without looking first but this is even more important in an area like "Little Italy".There are some blocks and buildings that are ok but many that are a little dicey. It is important that you see the block, the building and apartment first. If you absolutely must rent something without seeing it make it as temporary as possible in case you don't like it when you get here.

Little Italy is not one of the best neighborhoods in The Bronx but it is certainly not the worst either. There are a lot of positives about it,especially if it is very close to your work.Great restaurants and food shopping..I could live there but it would definitely depend on the block, building and apartment.

Where will you be working? Fordham ? St Barnabus Hospital ? There are other neighborhoods that you might be more comfortable in that are not too far from either of these places.

Pelham Parkway is one of those neighborhoods you might be more comfortable in but then it's not within a few blocks of St Barnabus. It's either a pretty long walk(25 minutes) or 2 busses or a bus and a shorter walk.Unless you will have a car and St B's has free staff parking ? Depends on how close you want to be and whether you will have or even want a car, etc.I personally have no problem with the walk over there and I do so at least once a week or so but a lot of people aren't used to walking and it might get a little tedious doing it twice a day every day,in bad weather or at some very weird hour.

You might also want to consider how much you will want to use subways when living in NYC because the Little Italy neighborhood is a bit of a hike to the subway.

There seem to be a lot of St Barnabus and Fordham staff and students in Pelham Parkway though I know a lot of them live in Little Italy too.
