Anyone who remembers 102.7 WNEW where rock lives would remember him. He was doing weekend shows on WFUV, but he died today. I'm in my 30s, so I don't remember him as much as others might but my parents certainly would.

He was just recently on a program on NCC's college radio station. He was promoting his rock retrospective show at Five Towns College on Long Island about a month ago. I saw him hosting a live show, once.

I loved lstening to Mixed Bag and Allison Steele, The Night Bird.

And he was only in his mid-60s.

Younger people don't realize how much radio changed when FM started broadcasting rock music. The role of the DJs was different too.

Up to the late 60's, popular music was only on low-fi AM radio. You could hear a James Brown tune, followed by the Rolling Stones, followed by Dean Martin - all different genres of "pop" were lumped together on Top 40 AM radio. The only music you could find on FM was generally classical music.

In the late 60's, stations started popping up on FM that would play exclusively rock music - they would play album cuts and longer tunes that the pop AM stations wouldn't include on their strict playlists. The disc jockeys were chatty and knowledgeable about the music, and made you feel like you were hanging out with them in their living room. Most of today's DJs act either like buffoons or gossip columnists.

Very sad, he was a really good guy, a classy announcer
Amazing how he still had a young-sounding voice, even recently.
