Almost every time some people on these boards want to put down the idealized version they think out-of-towners have of New York City, they dredge up the Sex and The City thing. Can we lay that to rest?

I know that I can't be the only one here born befroe 1998, when SATC premiered. Folks have flocked to the city for sex, money, and glamour since way before SATC. Movies, TV show, and books ad nauseum have portrayed us as eternally hip, fascintaing, cutting-edge, sexually adventurous people living the high life in Manhattan.

But I get the feeling from the myriad references to SATC nobody ever read or saw anything before that, and they think out-of-towners knew anything about glamorous New York City before Carry Bradshaw and her crowd landed on HBO.

OF course that lifestyle only happens to a chosen few. Of course most New Yorkers live nothing like that. Of course pop culture exaggerates reality. So that's a big secret or what?

I think very few people moving here expect a life anything like that and can see that show for what it is: a fantasy entertainment and nothing more. So why can't posters on the New York City forum do the same and stop giving that show more weight and more influence than it probably ever had?

Don't worry....as the distance between the current day and the show's finale widens, SATC will fade along with it.....especially if more movies suck like SATC II!!!!! (LOL!)

I liked the HBO show Entourage better. It was complete opposite of SATC. Four Transplanted NYC guys trying to make it out in Hollywood Los Angeles.

That is such a Sex and the City thing to say Actually it is funny to go to Seattle and hear them mention Sleepless in Seattle when visiting the Space Needle when they go through their facts, could you imagine how many movie references they would have to make if that was done at the Empire State Building.

What's with the curmudgeonly demand? That's like asking people to stop referring to Breakfast at Tiffany's. Many young people came here in the 1970s because of the influence of Annie Hall and Manhattan. Not all of them found their dreams, but that's OK: that's the whole point of life, the pursuit of happiness. These days, SATC is what inspires many young people. That's also fine. Each generation has its own beacon.

More unrealistic than SATC and with a wider viewing audience was FRIENDS.

When I was working at Blockbuster part-time, I remember when the DVDs of Sex and the City came out, invariably someone would call and ask (not as a joke, they just got the title wrong) "Do you have Sex in the City?" To which I would reply, "No, I have sex in the country."

When I think of New York, I usually think of Seinfeld.
