I am moving to the NYC area in the coming months as a territorial sales representative. My territory includes all of north Jersey, NYC, Long Island, and southern CT. I'm 24 and want to be around other young people. I want to be able to walk places with easy access to NYC. I don't mind a small place but I would like to stay under $1500 a month. The amenities I would like are:

-parking (need)
-access to highways (partially negotiable)
-proximity or easy access to NYC (want)
-young people (need)
-walkable community (really really want)
-safe (need- I am a young female and i will probably live alone)
-laundry in apt (want but in building is a need)
-fitness center/gym (want)

I am under no impression that all of this will be available in one place, but what neighborhoods/towns should I look at?

Thanks so much!

check out stamford, CT... its young, extremely safe, a 40 min train ride to NYC, you would be able to find parking, right off 95 and the merrit, and has a decent and growing down town and is more reasonable than manhattan prices

Stamford would be OK, but it's as far north as you should consider.

For under 1500, look at studios in Manhattan on the Upper East Side and Murray Hill. Also check out Hoboken NJ, White Plains NY and Stamford CT. Personally, if I were you I'd want to be in Manhattan - you'll get the least for your $ there but you'll find yourself wishing you lived in walking distance/short cab ride away when you're out, rather than having to deal with a train out to the burbs.
