I believe unless its used for medical reasons it must be in a cage to be on the train.

So my yorkie will be fine as long as he's in his carrier? That's what I thought too, just wanted to be sure.

Yes, in a carrier is fine. Lately I've been seeing people taking their pooches on the train and walking along the subway platforms as if they were outdoors. Unless it's a helper/seeing eye dog, that's different but if it's a pet then they need to be in a carrier.

This is from the MTA website:
  1. Except as otherwise provided in paragraph (2) of this subdivision, no person may bring any animal on or into any conveyance or facility unless enclosed in a container and carried in a manner which would not annoy other passengers.
  2. Paragraph (1) of this subdivision does not apply to working dogs for law enforcement agencies, to service animals, or to animals which are being trained as service animals and are accompanying persons with disabilities, or to animals which are being trained as service animals by a professional trainer. All service animals and animals being trained as service animals must be harnessed or leashed.

I've sat next to plenty of little doggies in "bags" on the train. They usually get lots of attention and everyone wants to pet them.

I've taken my 60lb retriever and never had a problem. Only during off-hours though when the trains are less crowded. I also try to find a seat near people who look happy to see a dog. It actually seems to brighten most people's days.

Take it from a former conductor: the fine that goes along with being cited for bringing your dog onto the train will brighten the court's day. But probably not yours.
