i was in a 9 story residential apartment building the other day. i noticed it didn't have fire escapes, and i didn't see any visible sprinkler system in the apartment itself (didn't look too closely in the hallway)

building is from about 1960 i think. probably about a hundred to a hundred and fifty units or so if i had to guess

i was under the impression either fire escapes or sprinklers were required in NYC for such a building

however, it was actually a pretty nice building, had video cameras in the lobby, a garage, good upkeep, modern laundry with pay by card rather than quarters. so i'm assuming it's not flagrantly violating fire code

can anyone clarify my confusion? is there some other way to meet fire code

i did google briefly, but no quick answers there

I live in a bldg. that was built in 1950 which has 2 sets of stairs (one of them is considered the "fire stairs") as well as an outdoor fire escape but it has no sprinkler system. So the question is how old is the bldg. that you are living in and does it have an enclosed set of stairs that are instead of an outdoor fire escape? I believe that older buildings don't always have to a sprinkler system in the whole building.

-buildings over 6 stories are not allowed to have fire escapes, they must have fireproof stairwells
-buildings over 6 stories must be made of fireproof construction (steel, not wood framing)

thank very much 7th. i figured it was something about the construction, this makes a lot of sense

my current building is 7 floors and has both multiple fireproof stairs and sprinklers. guess since this other building is older it just has the former
