Hi, I will be visiting the city for 8 days at the end of September and end of December. I have been tipped off to Arthur Ave for great Italian. I know this is completely based on opinion, but where are some excellent restaurants in or around the city for different ethnicities. ie. Dominican, Indian, Chinese, Polish, anything goes! My limits are that I won't have a car, so subway or modest walk, and it will be supper.
I want to try authentic cuisine from real ethnic people--but don't want to worry about health safety.
Thanks!

All Manhattan so easy commuting:

East Sixth St. between First and Second Avenue for Indian.
(Lex between 25thh and 28th for vegetarian Indian.)

32nd St, Between Sixth and Fifth Aves for Korean.
Try ICHIUMI for lunch Mon -Thurs (6 E. 32nd...mixed Asian all you can eat.) The place will absolutely blow you away for $18.95...go famished.

Thai food? TOPAZ. East 66th St. between Sixth and Seventh at rear of City Center.

Kosher Deli? STAGE and CARNEGIE both on Seventh Avenue 53rd 55th roughly. Both are TERRIFIC.

Good and bad Italian is splattered all over town.

Chinese? Why a million restaurants in Chinatown of course. For a great bargain lunch special if uptown, my neighborhood fave is WOK ON 88TH (at 88th and Third Ave.) It's a nice sit-down cheapy after the Met or Guggenheim.

Greenpoint is the place for Polish. I like Karczma and Lomzynianka but I think they're all pretty good.

Sounds interesting. Looks like I have some research to do. Living in the Dallas area I don't near what NYC has to offer. Large amount of chains and Mexican food. Some ethnic but few and far between.

Maharlika on First Ave, has some great Filipino food.
Shalom Bombay on Lex between 39th and 40th has some solid Indian cuisine.
For sushi I like Masa in the Time Warner but Sushi Azabu in Tribeca has been getting a lot of talk (though I can't verify personally).

I've never had these types of food. I have wanted to try sushi but want it to be from a good place. Same with the other types of food. Texas is about barbecue. Being raised in AR, I'm used to Memphis style bbq. TX style is about the meat while Memphis is about the sauces and sides as well. I think I'm in for a treat in trying the new types of food--even if they aren't my particular taste. Gotta live a little!!!

Flushing in Queens at the very end of the 7 train is almost a must if you're doing ethnic food tourism. It's mostly for Chinese and Korean, but Chinese actually encompasses a lot of variety. I'd try the extra spicy Hunan House which is in walking distance of the station or even some of the shopping mall food food courts (either the more modern shopping complex ones or the basement dweller ones are all good). You can also get Western China-style skewers full of all kinds of meat (I prefer the lamb) for a dollar a piece all around. You won't even have to take the subway necessarily if you're launching off from Chinatown in Manhattan where there are shuttles that will take you straight to Flushing for $2.50.
