this looks like a jackpot of sorts for a lot of people. people forget that cops are under attack today more than ever before thanks to smartphone cameras. there's an anti-police sentiment in the air because of national events. a cop may not come home tonight. those two guys, the hispanic and chinese cop who were shot dead is just one example. it's a risky job just like fdny.
what i feel terrible about though is the military. those guys actually DO die and lose limbs regularly and are paid peanuts. that is really unfair. i am not even talking about the politics of naive and poor kids fighting wars for oil companies in the name of freedom. i am just saying their pay is terrible on top of having basically guaranteed ptsd.
They are not fighting in the name of freedom. They are fighting in the name of capitalism and free trade. Control of sea lanes and trying to bleed off the Russian bear that is trying to take over the middle east with the help of the Persian cat, and control of East Asia with the help of China and North Korea.
Starting pay for Sgt is $79,000 currently, with top pay after 4 years of $98,000. That all changes soon because of the recently ratified contract. That is base salary only, not counting longevity, holiday pay, uniform allowance and any night differential and overtime. No Sgt should make under $105k.
I grew up in a nice area on Staten Island and on my block half the big homes were owned by brass and the townhomes had a lot of cops/FDNY. My dad isn't a cop but all the other men in my family are, cops tend to live in the outer neighborhoods I've noticed lots in Staten Island where you can get a 4 bedroom new build for under a million.
