Out of desperation ..I took a room for rent in a building on 183rd and University... I will walk to the D train @ Fordham.

Was this a good move ..my main concerns was being near the D train (or A) ..... What are some of you guys take on the area ??.

Anything noteworthy around here ???? Help ! Safe ??

Why would you rent in a neighborhood you know nothing about ?

well 183 and University if i remember correctly ,the literal corner looked OK. you are not by the A, which is across the river in Inwood Manhattan. the surrounding area is pretty bad and id imagine the walk to the D and 4 could be intimidating

Isn't 't there a D train stop @ 183 rd/Grand Concourse that would be closer to you than Fordham Rd?

And why wouldn't you just use the 4 train @183/ Jerome? It 's closer than any of the others.

Supermario lives over there .I'm sure he will fill you in.

There's a good low end retail along Fordham Road. If your into urban art, great graffiti along the 4 line/Jerome Ave. Like really good stuff. Lot of Art Deco getting closer to the Grand Concourse. Probably some nice little Dominican restaurants around, not to sure about what's up that way lately. I would explore Jerome Ave north of Fordham Road and maybe around Burnside and East 183rd itself.

There are also bars and restaurants near Arthur Ave/E 187th Street, what's that a little over a mile East. And don't forget Dyckman near Broadway in the other direction (Manhattan side), there's a ton of Latin themed lounges out there now. They look pretty live daily.

Going a little farther north Kingsbridge/Norwood/Bedford Park has stuff too. Southwest, don't forget Harlem either, and if you take the 4 down the UES has lots of bars along Second Ave in the 80s I think. Very quick ride on the subway.

If you take the East 183rd Street/Jerome Ave 4 you can transfer at Yankee Stadium/E 161st St to the D (same direction anyway) or take the local B from East 183rd Street/Grand Concourse. It's been years since I used that line B/D. How does it operate now? Is B limited service and D express? What hours?

Thats one of the worse areas of the Bronx, very loud music blasting at all houts especially at summer, plenty of people hanging oitside smoking weed. If you are a female you will be cat called all the time, your ipod maybr your brst frirnd to blockbout cat calling. One of my good friends nearly got stabbed in that area. Please use street smarts. Refer to SuperMario he knows this area and his peoples dominant the area as well, he can help you out.

It's tame. University avenue is a wide avenue, with lots of street lights, city buses, traffic, and foot traffic. I almost got robbed in that exact intersection 4 years ago, but that's when it was really bad. If you're going to live in UH, you could do much worse than W 183rd & University. The walk to the 4 train is rough though, especially around Grand and Davidson avenues. Andrews and Loring Pl are nothing to write home about, especially Loring Pl, which recently had a large Dominican heroin (Colombian connects) organization busted, which interestingly enough, was also busted in 1999...there are shootings around there. Neighborhood is about 73% Hispanic 20% black 7% others. More Puerto Ricans closer to the 4 train, more Dominicans on University and points west of it...African Americans are all over, scattered, on Andrews ave near Fordham rd...and throughout Grand & Davidson.

I'd say go for it...if this was 1985, 1991, 1999, 2007, or 2009, I'd say no...but 2012? go ahead.
