Many well to do Long Island married men have apartments in Manhattan for weekend business meetings. But on Sunday he always returns home with an apologetic look on his face (Yes, Gertrude it happened again) he feels secure in that dutch-colonial house, he's at home.

I live in NYC but have a place elsewhere.Sort of the opposite of the question you posed.....or maybe just a matter of perspective.

My great-aunt used to spend the winters in Florida at her deceased husband's condo and the summers in her rent-controlled apt. in Brooklyn.

Those who have alternative accomodations leaves the city for a few weeks during summer, those who don't brings chairs and other furniture on the street.

It helps if he has a new fur or an emerald neclace in hand to placate the screaming harridan.

Friends have Summer homes on Fire Island...but not me.

Even if I had the wherewithat to maintain two or more homes I wouldn't want the bother. One of the Fire Islanders spends all of April every weekend getting the place back into shape...yecch, what a waste of time.

Another couple I know bought in Jefferson County in the boonies while living in Riverdale. They worked for two yeasr doing a full almost GUT rehab while each holding down a City job.
One LOVES the place, the other cannot stand it in Winter...so they spend weekends separately in Winter which is NEVER good for a relationship.
The thought of a 2 hour drive out of the City every Friday and another on Sunday sounds to me like the definition of Hell.

That place that was going to be their retirement home soon seems like it is not going to work out, at least to my eyes.

That is an interesting story. My husband and I don't have an official second home because we do family gatherings at my parents vacation home out in Oregon, but as the kids get older it is something that we've been talking about. I convinced my husband to settle down here in Riverdale, but only after he had a chance to spend some time here. I grew up here, but he was used to city living so I didn't want him to feel uncomfortable. I could never imagine agreeing on getting any sort of home without my partner's consent. We are after all a couple, and compromise is key.

Darling!

I do summer in London......
Autumn in New York - so cinematic.....
Winter in the Greek Isles.....
And spring on the Riviera.

So yes, I have four places of residence. Five if you count my dumpy apartment in Toronto.
