NYPD not NYFD. What's sad is that any job that has standards has to be watered down to appease the racial arsonists.

There's no need to imagine. It's a very safe bet that there are people with racist attitudes working for the FDNY, the NYPD, the Post Office, Waldbaums, Morgan Stanley (see today's NY Post), and any other business/organization. Nobody is saying this way of thinking is correct, but you're never going to eliminate what's in people's hearts and minds. Giving all people a fair shot at the job is the only thing you can control. Worrying about the other stuff is pretty pointless.

I think it is reasonable to say that the father and son are 2 different people, but when one is the head, and the other is well on his way to the same job...you gotta wonder what is going on here.
you don't "gotta wonder" anything. The kid is a jerk. If you want to make assumptions about his family, well that says something about you now doesn't it?

And to pretend the place was always a welcoming place to those who are different is an insult to everyone's intelligence. This becomes just another example of continued attitudes which everyone claims miraculously disappeared in 1970. We know that's not the case, and like to pretend everything is fine and dandy and everyone is equal..it helps us all sleep at night. And when things like this happens, it's a reminder that things are not ok.

At least that's how I see it.
How exactly would you have "those who are different" be properly "welcomed? It's a TEST that anyone can take. SOCIETY in general has not been welcoming to certain groups...and many institutions have historically excluded as a result. The FDNY did no such thing.

not an apples to apples comparison as there is much less turnover (NYPD cops are much more likely to leave and take another job) and about 30,000 fewer employees.

Norwood...I don't believe anything has to be watered down...because that presumes everyone who is there now did it 100% on their own merit. When was that ever the case with the NYFD? It was always who you knew...much like most of those civil service jobs. Some changed, some didn't...the NYFD is one that is refusing to change.

You can call it watered down...but what do you call it when you got the job because your uncle worked there? Or because you went to school with the recruiter? Or because you live next door to the union boss? Let's just ignore all that....and live under the illusion that the NYFD was always a meritocracy and everyone is there because they "earned it by themselves", and the second those browns and blacks wanted in, they had to "water down" the standards. This is yet another example of the usual double standard.

RIGHT.

What do you know about how to get into the NYFD? You're just exaggerating again because one of your compadres just couldn't pass the test or hack the physical and you blame nepotism and racism. I know plenty of people that got in on their own merit.

You're right. I heard that the FDNY for years allowed applicants to take the exam as a take-home test as long as they had a relative already working for the department. And if you're uncle is FDNY you only have to climb half the steps on the physical exam. You could also show up for work drunk and even high if you bribed the right guy!

SIB, why play this game? If you believe the NYFD was a pure meritocracy, there is nothing else to talk about.

SIB, The biggest turnover in FDNY over 100 year tradition happen after 9/11. When 343 members were killed. On top of that many others got sick with all types of ailments. Most of the job today was hired after 9/11. The bottom line is the job has become a huge lighting rod for racial arsonists. "All white male club" Does anyone complain about other city jobs? The fdny spent millions on top of millions to diversify. The bottom line is Judge Grafius has a political mission to accomplish.
