David Cruz comes to Whole Foods for more than groceries. It’s one of the few places in the city where he can charge up his hybrid Toyota Prius Prime for free.
"My wife does the shopping while I charge up, basically," Cruz says.
Many charging stations in the city are in parking garages, so juicing up can get pricey.
“The parking fee, plus the other small fee they charge, and it could cost you like $50," Cruz says.
If the future of cars is electric, New York is still in the Dark Ages.
In late June, the Department of Transportation unveiled New York City’s first curbside electric-vehicle charging station in the Norwood section of the Bronx, while announcing that another one-hundred stations would be installed throughout the boroughs by October 2021.
The DOT’S announcement was made alongside Con Edison and FLO, a Canadian company which operates a network of charging stations which are starting to crop up around the city.
One of Flo’s newest charging stations can be found at 4 West 93rd Street, between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue. The charging station has space for two cars, and Flo’s map indicates that prices at 93rd Street are $2.50 per hour between 6am and 9pm and $1 per hour between 9pm and 6am.

Flo recently installed charging stations at 170 East End Avenue, between 87th and 88th Streets in front of Carl Schurz Park; at 101 East 78th Street, between Park and Lex; and at 498 East 67th Street, at York Ave. Prices range from about $1 to $3 per hour, depending on the time of day.
New York is not in the Dark Ages.
Who in their right mind wants to hang around a charging
station for 2 hours to umm.......fill up their tank?
I would have bet the Sciences that Natural Gas
( since we have do much of it ) vehicles would dominate
the landscape. But no. Gas Bad. Solar Good say the
environmentalists who are leaving their carbon foot
prints all over. Bet the majority don't till their own land
or grow their own food. Own a compost? Probably not.
Anyway. You folks enjoy your day. I have been in 3 states
in under 2 hours compliments of gasoline and Shell Rewards
points filling up an empty tank for $25 bucks.

That's not how modern EVs or EV charging work and that natural gas can still be used, and used more efficiently, for passenger vehicles as feedstock for an efficient combined cycle electrical generation plant that generates electricity for EVs.
Anyone who has purchased an electric vehicle at this juncture, expecting to rely on public charging stations, is a boob. I am all for electric vehicles, but the public infrastructure isn't there yet. Currently, one needs their own driveway at the minimum, garage preferred.
The same people who want ev cars want to shut down the all nuke plants and stop all the gas plants that produce electricity from being built!
There's going to be some, but pretty limited overlap for people who want EVs *and* want to shut down all nuclear plants *and* want to stop all the gas plants from being built.
There are people who are interested in EVs that simply aren't that interested in energy politics or sources, but are there for the technical doodads which EVs often come loaded with or the sheer performance aspect especially the immediate torque availability and the raw performance where EVs can give you acceleration performance that is equal or better than ICE hypercars an order of magnitude or two more expensive or that it was the best utility value for their needs and budget. After all, vehicles are pretty substantial parts of most household budgets and there's only that much room for letting ideology dictate those purchases. For those not concerned about personal use, preferences, or finances as a major factor, which is going to be pretty rare, there are also those who aren't more about ecological environmental reasons, but more immediate ones and want to be rid of tailpipe emissions near them but wouldn't bat an eye at a power plant located further away from where people live.
For those who are buying EVs expressly for environmental reasons, there's a very large contingent of people in that group who are very much pro-nuclear plants for electricity generation and would like to see that massively increased. Of course, being pro-nuclear plants does not mean being for every single nuclear plant in existence because there are some older plants sited in places that are somewhat questionable such as Indian Point. However, there are a good variety of newer, generally safer and sometimes more efficient reactor designs that have been in existence for decades and a lot of additional promising research. For gas plants, there's probably a greater overlap for the subset of people who want EVs expressly for environmental reasons, but there are also those who view some gas plants especially under an efficient combined cycle generation process to be a pragmatic stepping stone as better sources for electrical generation are found and are at least better overall than the same miles being driven with an equivalent ICE vehicle.

Absolutely. It's currently a rare situation where an EV makes sense without having the ability to charge at home when parked. Two of the largest draws for EVs are the convenience of waking up with a full tank every day and lower operational costs compared to its nearest gas vehicle competitor and it's pretty hard to get either or both without home charging where you can charge overnight where you live and pay residential electricity rate without additional charges to power your vehicle. Outside of that, there's only fairly niche situations like your place of work where you routinely go to has available chargers and either doesn't cost anything as a perk or charges pretty close to the rate they get their electricity from.
