I need a quick answer to a question long story short I reported my DL lost because I lost my wallet, a nice person returned it to me. I need to rent a car tomorrow and have not gotten my new DL can I just use my old one? I am not sure if the # will change.

Thanks,

you could call the DMV and ask them if the # changes i don't think the # does change tho if all you are being issued is a replacement

Didn't they issue you a temporary ID? That's what they usually do until the official one arrives. Otherwise I would try to use the old one and explain your story if there is a problem. Never had any problems when I've been waiting for the new one and used the temporary one.

The number doesn't change. You can use the temporary license you were issued when you went for the replacement along with the one you got back when you got your wallet back.

The only change will be the bar code on the back of the license. I don't think rental car agencies use those, though.

Thanks for the reply. I never received a temporary license, I filed for a replacement online. The only e-mail notification I received was an automated response about my transaction being completed and it could take 2 weeks to receive the new DL.

I called the car rental company and they said as long as nothing is expired I should be ok.

Thanks again everyone for your response.

Watch your mail carefully... I had to apply for a new one twice because the first one was lost in the mail...

awe,

Use your old license but keep a copy of that confirmatory e-mail with you. Anyone but a truly insane cop will understand.

What? How would a police officer know, much less care, that you lost & found your DL?
It's not listed in any computer as stolen, as would be a car or license plate?

If you give them your DL, they check it to see whether it is active, or suspended, not valid.
It does contain your photo, so they can verify that it is you.
