The awful deluxe-ification of NYC that started in the late 1990s has not made living a bohemian lifestyle, with or without opiate use, any easier. I am an artist and I use sometimes, and like one of the other posters I left Williamsburg for South Brooklyn a few years ago. Funny enough though the last time I visited Williamsburg there were a lot of really, really young people who were starting to experiment with heroin, so in a way the torch has been passed.
Heroin might kill off the hipster movement, like so many other sub cultures before them. Ive heard about hipsters who left Williamsburg for ghetto parts of Bushwick after addiction took over.
Can someone give me bullet points on this thread? I'm far too lazy right now. Thanks...
Somebody wanted to know if all of the economic changes in the past decade or so had rendered an alternative lifestyle here in NYC unworkable. This invited a barrage of what seemed to me like 1950s stereotypes of opiate users and our lifestyle.
I offered my own personal experiences in that arena to refute the stereotypes, with mixed results which were predictable but nonetheless kind of train wreck-y.

Williamsburg rents have become a black hole as of late, and would be a hardship even for someone with lots of money and a relatively small habit. So there is often a need to simplify. Personally I would never choose Bushwick, but the folks who are probably have more ties to Williamsburg than I do and like being only a few stops away on the L.
You are clearly a closed-minded and judgmental person, who probably attends Staten Island neo Nazi meetings in their spare time.
Ok?
Call me whatever you want, I could care less about the opinions of drug users. If you think being called a nazi by an addict upsets me, you need a few more bundles. You guys couldn't raise my blood pressure if you tried to rob me like your compadres sometimes do. I'd actually have a good time (you, not so much, sorry).
