You cannot purchase an apartment in NYCHA. The only co-ops they have are Forest Hills Houses and you can't get in there unless you know somebody. I have been saying for years that they should turn some of them into co-ops. They should be run like how Mitchell-Lama is.

Turning housing projects into co-ops?? Wouldn't that require extensive renovations?

People have been saying this coop rumor for years. I also heard that Columbia U was going to buy my developement, never happened. I do think NYCHA should look into it.

It's funny because the only difference between a $4,000/month apartment in Stuy Town / Peter Cooper Village and a $200/month NYCHA apartment of the same size are the people in it.

Some multi-billion dollar apartment complexes look the same as the projects

For those pay $200 rent in NYCHA, they have no interest to buy anything. Their rents are just a fraction of basic maintenance fee. They don't want to take their apartment for free unless there is no sales restriction, besides they have already "taken" their apartments. Turning rental to coop is not going to work.

Another difference is a few billion in renovation costs and repairs. Some market rate complexes *do* look similar to NYCHA buildings from the outside but they are very different on the inside.

Agreed. Some families have been there for ages and already consider themselves "owners". My feeling is that we should make that a reality, give them their units and make them pay taxes or sell their place and leave. win/win. Doesn't seem likely though.
