This may have been discussed already. But I was wondering about the history of why Staten Island lacks the dense urban development found in the other boroughs and mostly feels like a dense suburb.

Simple. No subway connection to Manhattan. Density and availability of public transit are generally directly related.

I can see that. Still, a lot of areas in north Jersey appear to be more urban than Staten Island.

R train - next and last stop, Victory Boulevard. Stand clear of the closing doors.

That would certainly be the death of the Staten Island Ferry. It's such a shame that they don't allow cars on it anymore

There are greater expanses of suburban areas in Queens such as Bayside, and it's a better transition to Long Island than Brooklyn. But you do have your dense urban clusters like Flushing, Jamaica, Astoria, parts of Long Island City, all along Queens boulevard (Rego Park, Elmhurst, Forrest Hills), among many others

In Staten Island you have vast empty spaces that you won't find anywhere else in NYC, and I can't think of any real dense areas, not even the north shore
