I'm coming over for the Christmas/New Year season, and I want a hotel or co-op residence, so I can mix with the locals and see how I feel. Is there any place anyone can recommend?
I can't recommend this place first-hand as I have no personal knowledge about it, but I have seen this posting on craigslist regularly for the last year or so and it seems to me it could be cool for someone looking to have a real nyc experience instead of the midtown-fancy hotel-experience. Of course you have to be comfortable with communal living.
per night cozy NYC Guesthouse… WiFi, tv, friendly atmosphere (broken link)
If the link doesn't work any more, just go to the new york craigslist site, go to sublets and temporary and type Jackson Heights in the search box.
Jackson Heights is my neighborhood and it is convenient to Manhattan. The guesthouse appears to be about a 5 minute walk to the E and F trains which both go express to Manhattan and take about 10 minutes to get to the east part of midtown.
If you are looking for something fancier, there is probably a bed and breakfast directory for NYC.
