I know this has been mentioned before, but I can't find the old thread. So here goes...my building has around 200 units and is a mid-rise in Forest Hills, Queens. It's my first year having to tip the staff so I'm sort of clueless about it. I tipped some of the key players (super, certain doormen who were extra helpful), when I moved in. But how much to I tip for year end? I don't want to be cheap, but at the same time, I don't want to set myself up for having to spend a lot on this every year. Is $75 for the super too much or too little? I figured he'd get the most. What about the doormen who I come into contact with on a regular basis? $30-40 range? I really don't know what to do and I think it's probably too sensitive an issue to ask my neighbors. If I don't have any contact with certain staff, such as garage attendants, I don't have to tip them as well, do I? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Also, they do a great job. They're very 'by the book' and are helpful with information so I want to reflect that, but I don't want to go broke doing it!
If you do not use the garage, you are not obligated to tip the attendants, as that's the domain of those who park in the building. $75 for the super is fine, since you tipped when you moved in as well. For the doormen, your proposed gift range sounds reasonable for a mid-rise in Forest Hills. You may even be able to go to the $25 range per doorman if you wanted to do so.

I would say that the min. tip for any building staff member is $20 but usually more is expected.
Expected?! Nothing should be expected when it comes to tips!
Sorry if this is something I'm passionate about, but tips to building staff are something that is earned for good service, not a mandatory fee that is to be paid every Christmas. Back in the days of old, tips meant to insure prompt service. Nowadays, everyone has their hand out whether or not they've provided prompt and exemplary service or not. Some workers deserve tips because they go above and beyond what their salary dictates they must do. If you wish to tip these people, do so, but never be ashamed of the amount you give, no matter how little, as you should only give what you can truly afford.
