Hi, 2 years ago I had a walk at night between corner Leonard St and Meserole St to Bushwick Pl. At 3 am we were still sitting outside the building smoking cigarettes when a police car stopped and forced us to go inside the building: They told us it was too dangerous to stay outside. Coming from Europe, I could not believe it and at 4:00 am I walked the way back to my place. I must say I did not really feel confortable, but nothing happened along the way. Was it crazy??
The police always make it worse than it actually is. Their perception is twisted because they are exposed to all the bad things that happen in the neighborhood.
That´s exactly what I thought: they made me feel unconfortable. I really enjoyed my stay there and I found the people friendly. Some people said to me that the housing projects south were very dangerous, but there too, I did not feel unsafe (during day).
Yeah the same situation happened to me in East Harlem, nighttime, cops stopped us and said "You know it's a bad area right?"... Don't let the police dictate you how you should feel in a certain area, trust your instinct.

I am sorry but this is horrible advice... I have seen many times where tourists are where they should not be late at night or early in the morning. Too many natives want to say "oh this is a great safe city and you will be safe as long as you keep to yourself" to that I say poppycock.
