I am born and raised Northern Virginia and lived in DC as an adult. I am currently in Florida and looking to leave. My two top choices are Denver and NYC.

In New York I would look at living in Brooklyn or Astoria.

Reasons for New York:
I am in HR and a lot of great companies have HR in New York
I grew up going to NYC all the time
I love broadway
I hate driving and don't want a car
I am single and 30 so I need to be around singles my age
New York is an exciting city

However, a lot of my friends that moved to NY out of college are looking to leave. I think they are burnt out. Am I too old to be trying it out for the first time?

What is living in Brooklyn like compared to DC?

Any advice is appreciated!

Would love to hear what happened to your friends. NYC is just so damn expensive, that most transplants come here with high hopes just can't make it.

get a job first (if you can) and then a 1 year lease and then decide for yourself. Brooklyn is hot right now and the prices in a lot of Brooklyn are approaching those in Manhattan. If you are single then any age is fine but it does get very expensive to live a real family life if that is your goal and that is probably where your friends are.

I don't think you are too old as long as you can afford it and find a job. It's common here for people your age and older to live with roommates.

I moved at 29 and never regretted it. It depends on if you can find a job and an apartment you can afford. New York has a very transient professional class (similar to DC) so it’s easier to meet people in your 30s than elsewhere. In other cities I’ve lived in, everyone seems to have known each other since high school and their social circles are pretty much set.

You are definitely not too old. In NYC years, you are about 22--go for it.

Agree with the poster who said you're never too old, if this is where you want to be! My empty-nester parents are even considering selling their house and their car and moving up here. If you have good work experience in HR (and it sounds like you do), I don't think you'd have hard time finding a job.

You're never to old for something you want to do. Only judgemental people will feel that way. Generally those are also the people "that follow" certain ways of living and thinking that isn't their own but only what they think is "normal"

Have a blast and enjoy your new life. You don't need to live near singles as theirs singles all over the city. Live where you can afford.

Heck, the Koreans in the McDonalds thread are moving here in their 70s, without speaking a word of English!
