Hi Guys!

I will be graduating in May, and starting work full time in an office by Grand Central in July.

I've begun identifying various neighborhoods I'd be interested in moving to, based off of affordability and commute time.

A long time friend of mine offered me a GREAT deal in Kings Highway for DIRT CHEAP. Basically, his father is a property owner, and would be willing to rent out a studio to me for a price unheard of in NYC. Also, it wouldn't involve the legal tangle generally associated with renting.

I am seriously considering it, despite not knowing much about Kings Highway. Entirely based off the attractive rent quote.
It'd be a 50 minute or so commute to Grand Central, which isn't too bad. Probably a little over an hour Door-to-Door since it's located a few blocks from the Q stop.

However, it seems that this is a family neighborhood and I would get bored quiet quickly. Not to mention the hassle of getting downtown to go out, especially at late night hours when the train runs sporadically.

If anyone is from the area or has visited, can you comment on its viability for a freshly graduated young male?
If not this, it'll be paying WAY more in a place like Harlem or Astoria.

Thanks!

It's not the most exciting area for fresh out of college types, except for Russian-speakers. Won't find many bars and clubs catering to young Americans. But it is very affordable for nyc, and it's definitely not a bad neighborhood.

I'd say go for it. You can always move if you hate it.

As a young newcomer, I think you'd be happier if you could find a good roommate situation in area like Astoria, or many parts of Brooklyn, which I'm sure you've researched. If the studio is, say, $800 or $900 a month, you can find a roommate situation for that price in a much more interesting neighborhood. It would suck to move here for an exciting new job and start off feeling isolated due to where you live.

Safe area but if you're looking for nightlife this is not the place.

This.

Q train usually runs all right, even at night. If it's as cheap as you say/think it is, and you'd rather spend your money elsewhere (rather than rent) then why not?

I agree. Its close to transit, shopping with many stores and safe. You can always hop a subway to places with nightlife a.d other recreation. Go for it I say!

In response to BlainNYCs first post, I am in fact Russian speaking. So it is nice to know there is a nice Russian community there, although by all accounts I am the typical American college student, and have never lived in the Russian parts of BK.

Did a nice little Google maps tour of the area, and it looks like the typical nice, middle class family neighborhood.
Also, seems like a car would be ideal living in the neighborhood, which I do have but wanted to sell before moving to NYC.

But yea, as you guys said, I can always "try it out". Since I wouldn't be legally bound, I can technically move out at anytime.

I live by the Neck Rd station (2 from Kings Hwy on the Q) without a car, and I get by. It's not always the most convenient. At least Kings Hwy has plenty of shopping, so that's something to consider.
I'd say it is doable, but not necessarily preferable.
