Read this in the hard copy of the paper this morning. The apt was a tiny room and filled with stuff but he only wanted that view and did not care.

I could not imagine personally living in such a cramped space for so long.

Am betting those tiny rooms were once "servant's quarters" or some such staff housing. Still to get one of the major Jewish real estate families to cough up nearly 20 million shows a remarkable determination.

Poor man lead such a sad and seemingly wasted life. So brilliant yet locked himself away for decades. Was also shocked to find General MacArthur's son was camped out there as well.

One kind of misses the old Mayflower Hotel. It belonged to another era of New York City and was pretty thread bare and seedy by the time it was closed. Still it had some very large rooms and you couldn't beat the views of Central Park.

Interesting story if true. Holdouts in those situations can certainly get lots of money. But I'm skeptical about that $17 million figure w/o some sort of confirmation of the amount.

What does Jewish have to do with anything? What's your point?

Perhaps nothing but as a group they are not known often as generous landlords/property developers and often play hardball in these sort of situations. Am sure there are plenty of charity minded Jewish landlords/property owners but the history of this particular one tells a different story, at least when it comes to tenant relations.

Have no doubts it is true, why would the Post lie and more to the point they got their information from a new book.

In the grand scheme of things all the monies paid to these "hold outs" was a COD for the developers and thus could be wholly if not partially written off their taxes.

Fifteen Central Park West made the developers that 17 million back many times over. Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein and Alex Rodriguez among others live in the building which has the distinction of the having the highest priced apartment sold in NYC, 800 million was paid by some Russian billionare.
